They entered through an open door and found a charred female body in the living room. The caller stated that he had not been in the apartment before noon, where his ex-wife lived with their two minor children. He claimed that when he arrived, smoke was coming from under the door. He attempted to contact her by phone but was unsuccessful. He chose not to enter the apartment and instead called the police. He also claimed that he did not live in Hungary but visited every month to see his children. After the fire was extinguished, a search was conducted.

During this review, they analysed footage from the stairwell and discovered that one of the deceased Japanese mother’s children had left the apartment on the morning of the fire, and later, the ex-husband left with the other child.The newspaperreports that they took a taxi to a swimming pool. The husband then visited a café in the city centre before heading to a gym, where he stayed until noon. He exercised, took a sauna, and later returned to his ex-wife’s apartment, where he discovered the fire.Police identified fifty people from the stairwell CCTV footage. They reconstructed the man’s movements, and an analysis of the footage revealed inconsistencies in his account.

The BRFK stated on the police website that a significant development occurred on 3 February when suspicions arose that the ex-husband, after leaving the apartment with the children in the morning, had returned to the scene disguised with a helmet. He allegedly killed the Japanese mother, left, and later returned in disguise once again before calling 112. A forensic autopsy conducted on 3 February revealed signs of assault.According to24.huthe BRFK launched an investigation on suspicion of manslaughter. At their request, the 43-year-old Irish national was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Centre’s operational unit at around 11 pm in a block of flats on Ferenc Boulevard, District IX.
