Romania, breaking news in the international press, after the announcement of the Constitutional Court canceling the presidential elections. The main German media report the news and present it in context. "The presidential elections in Romania must be completely repeated," reports Tagesschau, the website of the newsroom of the most important public television in Germany, ARD. It happens because Romania was the target of an "aggressive Russian hybrid attack" in the elections. "The context is the publication of secret documents from the intelligence services that found interference in the electoral campaign. The far-right and pro-Russian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was massively promoted through TikTok with the help of coordinated accounts, recommendation algorithms and paid advertising", explains the quoted source, who recalls the surprising way in which the first presidential round ended. The decision was taken to "ensure the fairness and legality of the electoral process", notes the other German public station, ZDF, pointing out the fact that the second round of the elections was already underway, at the time of the CCR announcement.
The candidate "admirer of the Russian despot"
Bild, the German newspaper with the largest circulation, headlines: "Due to Putin's massive interference, the Court cancels the presidential elections in Romania." The tabloid sees Romania, along with Georgia, "under massive pressure from Russia". Candidate Georgescu, "the right-wing radical, is an admirer of the Russian despot and warrior Vladimir Putin". Bild also posts the comments made, prior to the CCR decision, on the X network by the leader of the Christian Democrats, Friedrich Merz, the most likely future chancellor of Germany: "Dear Romanians, on Sunday you are called to choose your new president. We know that Russia is massively trying to influence this election to destabilize your country and our common Europe, to create a system of manipulation, division, hatred, violence and oppression here in Europe as well. Romania belongs to Europe, it is an important part of Europe", wrote the CDU politician, inviting voters to vote "for the pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi".
Parties "often sympathetic to Russia" are strong
N-tv, the news channel associated with the conservative newspaper Die Welt, reports that "at the end of November, a pro-Kremlin candidate won the most votes in the first round of the presidential elections in Romania but shortly before the decisive vote, the the highest court of the country intervened". The material dedicated to the CCR decision also mentions that "extreme right-wing parties, which often sympathize with Russia, also had good results in the parliamentary elections in Romania last Sunday". Referring to the supreme office, n-tv writes that the president of the Republic is, in Romania, "a moral authority". The weekly Die Zeit also announces, in its electronic edition, the decision of the Constitutional Court in Bucharest, but also notes that "radical right-wing parties are strong" following the parliamentary elections.
