The province’s wildfire response ramped up all week, with more than 1,000 firefighters now battling blazes across Alberta with another 200 expected to arrive from the United States today. The hot, dry and windy conditions are expected to make their jobs harder and more complicated.

Colin Blair, executive director of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, said the province remains in an “extremely volatile situation” and the risk of new wildfires remains significant.

“It will take much more than a few scattered showers to change the wildfire situation,” he said.

As of 2:30 p.m. Friday, 2,616 people had registered at the reception centre, which serves an average of 1,000 meals per day while providing clothing, health services, income support and pet care, City of Edmonton spokeswoman Sandra Sperounes told Postmedia Friday, adding evacuees will continue receiving support.

Blair said the timing of re-entry to any evacuated community is dependent on the status of wildfires in the area.

“I realize that it’s stressful to be away from your homes and your work but these orders will remain in place until we know it is safe,” he said. “Evacuation orders are not made lightly and are in place to protect the people. People should not return to their homes unless the local authorities have given them the go-ahead.”

Every night at 7:30 p.m. the province is holding a telephone town hall for evacuees to ask questions and connect residents.

Evacuees can call 1-833-380-0691 to participate.

Stay safe out there.
